The Dr. Bert Shapiro Award
Named in honor of Dr. Bert Shapiro, longtime NIH MSTP Program Director, who encouraged collaboration among MD-PhD programs and ceaselessly advocated for their support from 1995 to 2011.
Purpose
To recognize an individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions to physician-scientist training on the national level for a sustained period of time.
Eligibility
Any MD-PhD program administrator, director, or other individual or organization that has made significant, sustained contributions to physician-scientist training — actively engaged, or no more than 2 years removed from such a role.
Criteria
Leadership, innovation, collegiality, participation at the national level, commitment, and duration of service. Both administrators and directors are expected to be honored over time.
Award
The honoree receives a suitable plaque. Their program receives a $500 award in the honoree's name, funded by the Association. Presented annually at the NACST meeting.
Selection process: The President-elect forms a subcommittee of equal numbers of administrators and directors from the Association Steering Committee. The subcommittee may solicit nominations from Association members or devise another means to develop a slate of nominees, then selects one honoree.
